Meet Emilene…in 2017, at the tender age of 3 years old, little Emilene was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The very day that her family were informed of her condition, she was rushed to the provincial hospital’s Paediatric Oncology Unit where she was treated immediately due to the severity of the disease, with the added challenge of her having autism too. Unlike other “normal” young cancer patients, Emilene was autistic, which made it more difficult and traumatic (for both child, parents and hospital staff) to communicate with her during her treatment. She was hospitalized for 7 months, undergoing chemo therapy and having 8 drips inserted per day, with bouts of psychotic fits as the morphine she needed to manage her pain was clashing with the medication needed to manage her autism. It was a dark and trying time for her parents, they were at their wits end, seeking solutions, and desperate to save their precious daughter’s life.

After 5 months of treatment, and support from her family and other cancer organizations like Cupcakes of Hope, Emilene started showing signs that she was going into remission! The Dr’s released Emilene on a 5 day “home” breakaway where she & her parents could go visit family for the first time.
However, while just 2 days in on the short holiday with her family, Emilene’s neck pulled stiff and she struggled to stay awake. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where tests revealed that she had developed hydrocephalus and needed an emergency operation to drain the excess fluid from her brain. She was placed in ICU with other adults with an External Shunt protruding out of her skull for 6 weeks. After things settled down the oncologist (Dr. J. Vermeulen) ran tests on Emilene’s CNS fluid and found that her Leukemia cells had spread to her brain and caused blockage which led to the Hydrocephalus.
In order to try and save Emilene’s life, they immediately started her on a HIGH-RISK PROTOCOL to fight the cancer. What made the situation even riskier was that her External Shunt needed replacement after every 2 weeks, which led to young Emilene having 4 brain operations within the 6-week period in between chemo.

After a 5-week long daily nightmare, Emilene’s doctor delivered heart crushing news, that even after being given the strongest chemo, the cancer cells seem to get more aggressive. Thus, a decision was made by all the leading oncologists in South Africa to stop any further treatment. The family were advised to go home and spend whatever time they had left with their daughter (Doctor’s estimated 3 – 4 weeks).

The devastation felt by Emilene’s parents cannot be summed up into words.
